Environment: Forest-like environment, with deciduous trees, various bushlands, and a large creek with running water
Features: a pterodactyl-like torso - to have strength and muscle, with a large serpent tail - to enable swimming at high speeds through the creek, a crocodile snout/mouth – to enable the carnivorous creature to prey on smaller anatomies, a hippopotamus head and ears – for a large skull structure and around eye anatomy.
I researched different animals along with their features and behaviours that were a product of their environment. To explore a different area, I particularly looked at extinct animal features which lead me to using the pterodactyl body shape. I used newspaper, paper mache and modroc to build the initial shape and form of my creature. The paper mache enabled me to sculpt the defined features and in-lay the eyes. Exploring finishes to my final piece was more challenging, as creating realistic textures to match my creature was not working with paint or paint mediums. Thus I explored the use of natural elements. I wanted to make a unique piece, so I used eucalypt tree bark. This required me to keep the bark wet, enabling me to tare it into small shreds and layer it in a scaled-like effect. This was incredibly time consuming as each piece of bark was laid with tweezers and specific shapes of bark were torn to sculpt specific parts.
