Artist Statement:
Jarred is a scavenger that hunts through bins and feast on small pests. Jarrad lives in urban environments and has been sighted down dark alley ways. In the winter Jarred is nocturnal but, in the summer, Jarred basks in the sun where there are no people as they are shy creatures. Jarred has thick cow like fur that provides warmth up to -8 degrees. Jarred’s teeth are used for eating small mammals. He has powerful back legs that are used to run and climb walls or fences.
I started off making Jarred by sculpting his head out of newspaper. I then covered the newspaper head in paper mache pulp, in this process I added the eyes. I then made the rest of the body parts in the same process. I attached all of the body parts together by using Modroc (this provided extra strength and allowed me to work faster). I then covered the Modroc in paper Mache again to have better body detail and have a surface to glue the fur. Using and exco knife I cut the faux fur fabric from the underside (doing small parts at a time) and applied them to my creature ensuring the fur covered the seams/joins.
