Artist Statement:
The name of my mythological creature is called Nyx. My creation’s purpose is to guard an ancient rock that contains the worlds most protected secrets. To conduct this protection, it curses any living organism that crosses its path; the curses range from bringing bad luck, to memory loss, to death. It predominately dwells within the deepest crevices of the ocean, but it often comes to land, preying within the trees in order to feed upon birds and their eggs. The creature has an eel shaped body to help it glide and swim in the deep sea smoothly but has bumps on its skin to grasp to trees. It has large eyes to enable it to see in the dark and sharp front teeth to attack its prey. The head shape is similar to that of a snake to allow it to widely open its jaw. The creature has antennae to sense food as it has no nose. Two raptorial legs protrude from the body to enhance hunting and to quicken its movement on land.
My creatures design was influenced from pre-existing animals. Consequently, this was my starting point; researching attributes and aspects of certain organisms to incorporate into my creature. I wanted my design to be like the horrendous and gruesome animals found in the deep sea, so I focused on those characteristics of animals to achieve this. I placed my creature in a position that had an appropriate amount of negative and positive space to further enhance the realism of the pose. The intended meaning of my creature was to incorporate realistic aspects into a mythical concept. Overall, I am extremely pleased at the outcome of my creature.
