Artist Statement:
My creature is the keeper of the sea. In winter, Toka Whero Neke lives down in the deep ocean sea cliffs and canyons. During summer, it moves to the mangroves, rockpools and will venture into the blue line of the sea. Its crab-like legs enables its movement on land and in water.
Its focal point are the 2 heads. One head is dominant; its beak is used for foraging, attacking prey and fighting off predators. The second head is more oriented in feeding in order for it to grow.
It's sharp spikes are a defense mechanism used for protecting itself from predators, they are also used by the creature to detect movement occurring around it. Its enlarge eyes enables it see long distances through dark and murky waters.
This piece is made from newspaper, paper mache, modroc, modelling compound and acrylic paint. Constructing this piece, I had to use a number of steps where the creature changed from my original design. It evolved with the mediums and how I viewed it as I constructed it.
