Artist Statement:
My creature is the guardian of its snowy environment. It is a graceful creature, that looks enchanting and kind, but it’s also a deadly hunter. Its dwellings of the snowy environment are harsh but its patrolled territory is predominantly around large trees and lakes. It’s padded feet and sharp claws make it easy to walk on ice and climb frosted trees. Its strong but sharp claws enable it to break ice but also grip to frozen surfaces. Its large eyes enable it to see at night and to see its prey at an extensive distance and low light.
This creature also has antlers to ward off and intimidate potential predators and battle other Vulpes Nix that stray within its territory. Its small, forward pointing ears allows the creature to have incredible hearing thus being able to detect movement under ice or snow. The thick fur acts as an insulating coat and its white to blend in with its snowy surroundings. The tail is used for balance when climbing trees and used for communication with its own and other species.
I like the idea of snow, so I started researching snow animals and what they needed in order to survive such cold temperatures. One of my main influences was the artic fox, which inspired my creatures body and front legs. The intended meaning behind my creature is that something can be beautiful and graceful, but it can also have a deadly, killer side. The most challenging part was applying the faux fur. This required a lot of placing, scaling and experimental application of of fur pieces to ensure the fur covering joins and flowing in the right direction.
Overall, I am happy with my final piece I’ve produced. There are some factors I’d like to change as one of my idea was to have my creature mounted in a rock, surrounded by snow or ice. I also would’ve liked to add some longer claws around prey to look like my creature has just caught something. Although I didn’t get those things done, I am beyond happy with the creature I made. Towards the start, I don’t think I utilized my time as well as I could have, but towards the end I got heaps done in the lessons and outside of class time. I am proud of what I’ve been able to get done and I’m proud of my final result.
